How to Choose a Chinese Heater Manufacturer: The 10-Point Vetting Checklist
A buyer's checklist for sourcing infrared heaters, convection heaters, or patio heaters from China — 10 questions that separate reliable manufacturers from trading companies and quality disasters.

Why this list exists
Every year, hundreds of European, North American, and Middle Eastern buyers lose money on Chinese heater shipments that arrive late, fail safety inspection, or die in the field after one season. The pattern is almost always the same: the buyer picked a supplier on price alone, or on a glossy Alibaba Gold Supplier badge, without asking the questions that would have exposed the real situation in 20 minutes.
This is the 10-question checklist we wish every buyer ran before sending a deposit. It works for infrared heaters, convection heaters, evaporative coolers, and most other climate-control equipment.
The 10 questions
1. Are you the manufacturer, or a trading company?
This is the single most important question. Ask it first, in writing, and require a yes/no answer.
- Manufacturer: Owns the factory, the tooling, the R&D team, and the quality control. You are buying direct from the source.
- Trading company: Resells another factory's product, often with their own logo and packaging. They add 10–25% to the factory price and have no direct control over quality.
A trading company is not automatically a bad choice. But you should know that you are paying for a middleman, and that the manufacturer has no direct relationship with you if a quality issue arises.
How to verify: Ask for the factory's business license, the export license, and photos of the production line with your specific product on it. A real manufacturer will send these in 24 hours. A trading company will stall.
2. What certifications do you hold, and can I see the certificates?
For heaters, the baseline you need:
- CE — mandatory for Europe
- CB — international baseline, recognized in 50+ countries
- RoHS — restricts hazardous substances
- SAA — required for Australia
- UL / ETL — required for the United States and Canada
- ISO 9001 — quality management system (not a product cert, but a process cert)
Do not accept logos on a PDF. Ask for the actual certificate PDFs with the issuing lab's name, the certificate number, and the model numbers listed. Verify the certificate number on the issuing lab's website.
Red flag: A supplier that says "we have all certificates" but cannot produce them in writing within 48 hours.
3. Can I visit the factory, and when was the last TÜV / SGS / BV audit?
Any serious manufacturer will host a factory visit. Budget 1 day for the audit tour. If the supplier says "no need, trust us" or only offers a video tour with no in-person option, walk away.
If the factory has been audited by TÜV, SGS, BV, or Intertek, ask for the audit report. The report will tell you the factory's actual headcount, production capacity, quality system, and any non-conformities found. A factory that has never been audited by a third party is an unknown quantity.
JHCOOL note: We are TÜV-verified. The audit report is available on request to qualified buyers.
4. What is your minimum order quantity (MOQ)?
The honest answer depends on the product. For JHCOOL:
- Stock infrared heater models: MOQ 2 units (sample order)
- OEM / ODM with custom color or logo: MOQ 100–300 units
- Full custom tooling: MOQ 1,000–3,000 units
If a supplier quotes you an MOQ of 1 piece on a complex OEM, they are quoting you the trading-company model. The factory will not actually produce your custom order at that volume.
5. What is the lead time for a 20-foot and 40-foot container?
A manufacturer with a real production schedule will quote you lead time in business days from deposit receipt:
- Stock model: 7–15 days
- OEM color/logo: 20–35 days
- Full OEM custom: 45–75 days
If the answer is "very fast" with no number, or shorter than the above without justification, the order is being drop-shipped from another factory. You are not dealing with the manufacturer.
6. What is the warranty, and what does it cover?
A serious manufacturer offers:
- Emitter element: 2 years minimum (3 is competitive)
- Housing and structural components: 3–5 years
- Electronics (thermostat, controls): 1 year minimum
- Spare parts availability: 5 years after final shipment
Get this in writing. The warranty is only as good as the manufacturer's willingness to honor it 3 years from now.
7. What is the on-time delivery rate for the last 12 months?
A reliable Chinese climate-control manufacturer will quote 95%+ on-time delivery for the trailing 12 months. JHCOOL's verified on-time delivery rate is 97.1% over the last four quarters.
Ask for the data. If the supplier cannot produce it, the actual rate is probably below 85%.
8. Can you provide 3 buyer references in my country or region?
Real manufacturers have long-term B2B relationships. They will have buyers in Europe, North America, the Middle East, and elsewhere who can be contacted for a frank conversation. A 5-minute call with an existing buyer will tell you more than 50 emails with the salesperson.
If the supplier says "we cannot share buyer contacts due to confidentiality" — that is a normal answer, but then ask for a case study with the buyer's permission, or a verifiable shipment record (bill of lading copies, customs declaration numbers, with sensitive information redacted).
9. What is the payment terms structure?
Standard Chinese export terms:
- T/T (telegraphic transfer): 30% deposit, 70% balance against copy of B/L (bill of lading). This is the norm.
- L/C (letter of credit): For larger orders, often above USD 50,000. Adds cost but adds security.
- Trade Assurance (Alibaba): Useful for first orders, but expensive in fees and not a substitute for real due diligence.
Red flag: A supplier asking for 100% upfront, or 50%+ deposit on a small first order. That is a cash-flow red flag.
10. What happens if a container arrives with defects?
Every shipment should be inspected, ideally by a third-party pre-shipment inspector (SGS, BV, Intertek, AsiaInspection, or QIMA). Cost: USD 200–400 per man-day. Worth it for any order above USD 5,000.
If defects are found:
- The factory pays for return shipping and replacement, or
- The factory refunds the defective portion, or
- The factory issues a credit against the next order
Get this resolution process in writing, in the sales contract, before the deposit goes through.

What a good answer sounds like
Here is what a real manufacturer says when you ask all 10 of the above:
"Yes, we are the manufacturer. We have been making climate-control equipment in Fuzhou since 2003. Our factory occupies 30,000 m². We can host your visit any time, and we were last audited by TÜV in [date] — I will send the report. We hold CE, CB, SAA, RoHS, and ISO 9001. I will send the certificates today. Our MOQ for stock models is 2 units; for OEM with custom logo it is 100 units. Lead time for a 20-foot container of stock JH-2000W heaters is 15 business days from deposit. We offer a 3-year warranty on the emitter and 5 years on the housing. Our on-time delivery rate over the last 12 months is 97.1%. I will connect you with two buyers in Spain and one in Germany who have agreed to take your call. Standard payment is 30/70 T/T. Pre-shipment inspection by SGS or BV is welcome; defects are replaced at our cost."
If you hear something like that, you are talking to the right supplier.
What a bad answer sounds like
"We are a leading manufacturer. We have many certificates. Alibaba Gold Supplier since 2010. Lowest price guaranteed. MOQ 1 piece. Fast delivery 7 days. Please send deposit to our Hong Kong account. We will send certificates after order confirmed."
Run. Do not walk.

The bottom line
The 10 questions take 20 minutes to ask and 24 hours to answer properly. They will save you from the single most expensive mistake in Chinese sourcing: trusting a price without verifying the supplier. Do them every time, on every order, regardless of how good the price looks.
